pretty spring pajamas

If you know me, you likely know about my love for a good pajama set. A good pajama set makes me so happy, and the spring pajamas that are out right now are doing just that!

My pajama set collection started in high school, when my mom started giving my siblings and I pajamas for Christmas every year, with pretty pj sets for my sister and me. We gathered a few pairs of flannel pajamas, perfect for cold winter nights. Over the years I have increased my pajama set collection and always love getting a new pair. My sister and I received these soft, stretchy, striped cotton pajamas for Christmas and they are one of my favorites! They are the most comfortable pair I have and are so cute with the pretty piping detail and cuffs. (Just make sure to size down if you get these as they run a little big.)

One year while we were dating, Will invited me to spend 4th of July with his family at his grandparents house. This left me in a pajama conundrum – flannel isn’t the best material for July in the south, but I wanted to make a good impression in front of all of his extended family and not wear a ratty t-shirt either. With my mom’s help, I found a pretty pink striped cotton pajama shorts set that worked perfectly for the hot summer nights, and still looked lovely and classy at the breakfast table in the morning. That pajama set, which I still wear and love, taught me the versatility of cotton pajamas and a good shorts set.

With the heavy duvet on our bed in the winter and a light maltese covering it in the summer, I can wear cotton pajamas year round without feeling too cold or too hot (though some frigid nights are strictly for flannel). Even when we travel in the winter I pack one of my pajama shorts sets, and often end up wearing them if the place where we are staying has the heat cranked up. With warmer weather here to stay, I am so excited to have my shorts sets back in full rotation and to see all of the beautiful new shorts sets that are out for the warm spring weather. I have heard wonderful things about Eberjey and Lake pajamas, and I have my eye on this pretty coral striped shorts set and this darling citrus-inspired set. I love all of the patterns that are out right now, too. These gingham pajamas and these lightweight poppy print pajama shorts, pants and shirt are all adorable! 2017 spring wishlist

I just love spring. The beautiful flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping, the cool, dewy mornings transition into lovely warm afternoons. Alongside the changes in nature, new styles start popping up in stores and we shed our winter closets for spring clothes and our boots for open toed shoes. I love pulling out dresses, fun tops and sandals as the weather gets warmer, and I’m excited for the new arrivals that have been coming out in my favorite stores. There are so many cute spring items out right now, so I thought I would make a spring wishlist from a few items that have caught my eye.

I am loving the ruffles, one-shoulder (or off-the-shoulder), and stripes (shocker) trends this season. The unique shapes of tops and dresses are so prevalent, and I imagine would make putting together outfits so fun! I have one shirt with ruffled sleeves and not only is it fun to wear, it is unexpected and makes me feel more confident! I’ll take that perk any day! :)

I have been on the lookout for new sandals since last summer, and never bit the bullet. I have my eye on these Jack Rogers Lauren slide sandals and am crossing my fingers that they might show up in a wrapped box on my birthday ;)

Two other items I’m looking to replace are my raincoat and my coin purse. I have had my raincoat since high school and while it has been a durable shell, the lining is starting to peel off. Since I’m no longer wearing it for treks across campus, like I did in college, but likely just short jaunts between my car and buildings, I love the idea of these more adult-looking options. The colors and shapes are so gorgeous, you wouldn’t even think they were raincoats. Maybe this is a sign that I hold on to things too long, but I’m also still using the coin purse (which I use as a wallet) that Will gave me when we were in college. It is on it’s last leg and struggling to hold on. Just like my raincoat, I’m excited to get one that looks more adult-like, and less college-bound. These classic leather options look beautiful and would fit the bill perfectly, no pun intended.

Yesterday I posted a gift guide for all of the women in your life. Today, we are moving on to the guys with a gift guide for him! Just like in yesterday’s gift guide, there are gifts of all price ranges so you can get a great gift for grandpa, the perfect present for your pa, and a superb stocking stuffer for your secret Santa, Sam. ;) Sometimes I feel like the guys in my life are some of the most difficult to shop for (looking at you, Will and Dad). Over the years I have gotten better at knowing what they would like and what would be good gifts for any guy in case I can’t find anything specific for them. It is helpful to know their interests (which I talk about a little later), so you can make the gift more personalized for them.

Gift Guide For Him

Will and I both love a good quarter zip. The “Better Sweater” fleece jacket from Patagonia is a great option for casual weekends and evenings when there is a chill in the air but a full coat is overkill or as an extra layer under your coat when it is really cold outside.

Button-down shirts are always on Will’s gift list, since he wears them every day in the clinic. I love the festive plaid of this button-down shirt (and at less than $25 it is such a great price). It would be great for Christmas parties, but could also be worn with a simple tie in a fancier setting. This great tartan bow tie is another great gift for the guys who dress up often. It would go well with one of the solid button-down shirts for all of his Christmas celebrations.

Whiskey wedge ice molds, grill tools and Yeti tumblers are great for any guy on your list, especially when you are stumped on ideas. Yeti tumblers keep drinks cold or hot for hours and they come in collegiate versions for his favorite team. I didn’t find this out until recently, but Yeti also offers customization, so you can put his initials, a logo or text on any of the tumblers.

I said this in the gift guide for her and I stand by it for guys too: socks are great for anyone on your list on their own or as an add-on gift. I think these Star Wars socks are hilarious and perfect for Star Wars fans, especially as the new movies come out, but the classic patterns are also great for those whose fandoms you aren’t aware of (like your office secret Santa).

Another gift that can easily be personalized is a book about their interest or hobby. Coffee table books with photos and information are great, and you can choose whichever topic they like. If they are interested in travel, get a travel guidebook. He likes golfing? This book about golf courses around the world is perfect. He wants to learn more about backyard chickens? Guides to specific subjects like those are easily searchable on the vast book source that is Amazon and make for a thoughtful gift.

For the boyfriends, husbands and dads, a nice sweater is a great gift idea. Cable knit, v-neckwool, there are so many options. I like to stick with a classic look or a color I know they will wear often. The color of their alma mater is also a good bet, since they will have a reason to wear it on game days ;). To get even more personal than just a sweater in their team’s color, these knitted college sweaters are so cute and much classier than a sweatshirt. You can even get one customized if you don’t find his school!

Pajamas (a set or just pj pants) are easy and a very traditional gift for Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. To go along with the nighttime routine, this toiletry bag is sturdy and great for long and short trips. Will likes to keep all of his essentials in a small bag like this so he can grab everything he needs when we go out of town or if he is on-call in the hospital overnight. Some of these smaller bags are great prices too.

Finally, one of the most exciting gifts – the gift of technology! The Amazon Fire TV Stick, Tap, Echo, and Echo Dot, a bluetooth speaker and the brand new Google Home are all great gifts that are sure to spark excitement on Christmas morning. The Fire TV Stick, Echo Dot and some of the bluetooth speakers are $50 and under and are great gadgets to play with on Christmas Day!

Guys can be difficult to shop for, not because they are difficult to please, but because sometimes I don’t feel like what I get is personalized enough to be a great gift. I hope these ideas help you in your gift searching and giving process!

Fall is officially here! It is still a little warm outside, but a few days this week have already felt like the new season. I can’t wait until it cools down for good!

Fall is my favorite season for clothes. I love the layers, textures and colors that come with the season. Each year I reach for a few fall outfit essentials again and again. They are classic pieces and outfits that will always be perfect for autumn. I can’t wait to pull them out again so soon!

Vests:
From puffer vests to fluffy and furry vests, these layering pieces are perfect for cooler fall weather that doesn’t yet require a jacket. They pair with almost any outfit – dress, skirt, jeans, corduroy, you name it and a vest will look great with it. I just got a navy puffer vest this year and I can’t tell you how excited I am to use it!

Classic sweater:
I love the combination of a classic sweater with jeans or a skirt in the fall. They are so versatile and can be dressed up with heels and a statement necklace, or dressed down with jeans and boots. Cable knit sweaters are beautiful for fall and winter, but I also love some of the thinner sweaters for layering.

Plaid:
Like vests, plaid are great with most fall outfits. Add a plaid button down or a plaid scarf to an outfit for an instantly classic fall look. There are so many great plaid shirts and scarves out right now, but they don’t stay in stock long! I love these plaid shirt dresses too! So cute!

Skirt:
I started my first post-college job in September after my senior year. The weekend before I started I bought this wool skirt and it is still one of my favorite fall pieces. I wear it all the time with long sleeve t-shirts, button downs, sweaters, boots, flats, heels – almost every other cold weather item in my closet matches it. I got this houndstooth variation the next year and love the pattern so much. Just like plaid, it is quintessentially fall to me.

Jacket:
A light jacket or a classic trench coat are perfect for brisk fall days. They give you that little bit of extra warmth needed and are a classic piece to add some sophistication to any outfit. I love the colors, patterns and textures of the corduroy and the wool houndstooth jackets, but I think navy and camel colored blazers always look great too.

Boots (Hunters and Riding):
When fall weather comes around one of the first, and easiest, changes to make to an outfit is adding boots. Riding boots like these or these are perfect everyday wear, since they look polished and can be dressed up or down.They pair well with skirts, dresses and jeans alike and make even a summery top look more seasonal for fall. Hunter boots are my go-to for rainy weather, grassy fields (like pumpkin patches and apple orchards), and outdoor adventures. I have the original tall boots in hunter green and love them, but I also like some of the newer styles like the refined boots and the packable tour boots. I also threw in some leopard print shoes below, because they are some of my other go-to patterned shoes for fall :)

nordstrom anniversary sale!

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is here and now open to the public! It feels like every blogger has been posting about this for so long because of the early access sale period that was only open to cardholders, but here we are, at the public entrance, ready to charge. I put together a few different looks below, all made up entirely of items that are on sale. The #nsale clothes, colors and fabrics have me wishing we could curl up with a mug of hot cider and enjoy the crisp weather as we admire the changing leaves. But alas, it is in the upper 90s today and we are still chugging along in the middle of summer. At least these clothes give us something to look forward to with cooler weather and warmer clothes ahead. I’d love to know if you shopped the sale and what your purchases were! I can’t wait to see all of the fall clothes! :)

This first outfit from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is full of burgundy/wine/bordeaux/whatever we are calling the color this season. I have some items in this color from last year and I love the rich tones. They pair perfectly with the greys, blacks and camels that are all great for fall.

red, white and blue outfits

Light a sparkler and get ready for some Memorial Day fun and some red, white and blue goodness! I’m so so excited about this post – mainly because I would love to have every one of these items in my closet. Pretty please? I didn’t realize until a few weeks ago, when I recently organized my closet after we moved, how much red, white and blue I have. I love the combination of blue and white, and often grab red items because they are so fun and vibrant, and go well with my blonde coloring. The stripes and gingham all around this season make me so happy too. My family jokes with me about constantly wearing stripes, and stripes take up a good chunk of my wardrobe, but hey, they are always in style. ;) I hold firm to my belief that you can never have too many stripes.

I started to write about my favorite dress out of these, but I am really having trouble deciding. I love them all! They would be so cute for a Memorial Day brunch, or a big Fourth of July celebration. The silhouettes of each of these dresses are so beautiful. I love the flutter sleeves on the first two and shirtdresses are always flattering.

I didn’t put any rompers in the photo, but these were too cute not to include. That light blue eyelet one has a low back tied with a bow! The blue lace is gorgeous, and the gingham short sleeves would be the perfect picnic outfit.

Sandals:

There are so many cute wedges and sandals out right now. I love the gingham and pointed toe of these sling back flats, but the navy espadrilles would be so useful. And look at the cute tassels on the fun red ones! I didn’t notice that all of these are tie-up shoes until I started writing this – I guess they are in? Or maybe those are just the ones I like out of the summer shoes that are out now?

Tops:

I mentioned I had a little stripe problem. These shirts are evidence of that. Whoops. The bows on the beautiful gingham top and the striped tank add a feminine touch and a unique element to these shirts (the gingham one is the back of the shirt, by the way). I just got the striped short sleeve popover and love it! It is so cute and perfectly loose and light for the summer! Needless to say, I have many a striped tee, but this red, white and blue striped one would cover all of your bases for any cookout you go to on these patriotic holidays.

Bottoms:

Eyelet, scallops, stripes, and gingham – shorts are doing well right now. I love the different color options they provide too! The gingham shorts are high waisted, which makes them even more exciting! So cute!

 

Swimsuits:

For your holiday pool parties, these bathing suits fit the red, white, and blue color scheme, without feeling overly patriotic. Again with the stripes and gingham everywhere. Even with my love of both of those patterns, I think I actually like the solid red one-piece best! That sash is so lovely!

Thick sweaters rotate out and pretty sundresses rotate in. We swap our boots for sandals and our warm pants for lighter shorts. Spring is my favorite season of the year, and I’m so glad it and it’s fashion have arrived. There are so many great dresses, shoes and jewelry options that my winter closet is yearning to adopt for this new, warmer season.

Cognac sandals and gingham will always be two of my warm weather favorites and I love the new shoes that are out right now.  Off the shoulder tops are in right now, but I’m not sure how I feel about wearing them yet. I have tried on a few and always feel the shirt is going to ride up or people are going to be able to see down the shirt with any wrong move.  Any tips?

I think those tassel earrings would look so great with an off the shoulder top, or a sleeveless shirt/dress.  They make a fun statement without being overbearing.  There are so many great looks for spring out right now, with a wide variety of styles.  Below are some of the items on my spring fashion wishlist.  Do you have any favorite looks this season?

haircuts: a rocky relationship and inspiration

As you can see from the title of this post, I have a love-hate relationship with haircuts.  I love when my hair feels healthy and is beautifully styled after a fresh haircut, but for the past few years I have dreaded getting my hair cut.  I had a great hair stylist in high school, and even went back to that salon for my wedding hair, but I never found a hair salon I liked in college when I was away from home. This problem trickled into post-graduate life.  Whenever I needed a haircut in college I would wait until I was going home for the weekend or for a break and get my hair cut at my regular, beloved salon back home.  That was a fine solution, except that I didn’t get my hair cut nearly as often as I should, and it only prolonged and exacerbated the problem of not finding anyone local to cut my hair.

I wanted to get a haircut before Easter rolled around last year, and decided it was finally time to find someone more local.  As much as I loved my Raleigh hairstylist, I just didn’t have time to make the 45 minute to an hour trek in the middle of rush hour traffic to get a haircut before the salon closed, so I tried my luck at a new-to-me place nearby.  It was terrible.  The girl who was cutting my hair had only been at the salon for a few days and, while she seemed to know what she was doing, she was extremely slow at it.  I told her that I wanted a good amount cut off (I hadn’t had my hair cut in a while) and she questioned me the whole time.  She cut off less than I asked for, and when I asked her if she could cut it a bit shorter she said she really didn’t have time; she had another customer waiting and didn’t realize how long my all-one-length long-bob haircut would take, so she asked me to go home, see how I liked it, and come back if I wanted to have her cut off more.  I didn’t have time to make my haircut a two-night ordeal, and needless to say, I didn’t return.

Since then I have been so wary about trying a new salon, with the fear of having a bad experience again. But, after a while, hair grows to be too long, split ends form, and haircuts are necessary.  I scheduled a haircut for this week and realized that I wasn’t sure what kind of haircut I wanted, I just knew I wanted a change.  In the process of preparing for my haircut, I gathered some inspiration from celebrities.  I ended up loving my hair stylist and my new cut this time and am so glad to, after 6 years in this town, FINALLY have a local hairstylist again.  I gathered my inspiration photos and my final result below :)

Valentine’s Day Gift Guide for Care Packages

Can you believe Valentine’s day is less than one month away?!  I have been so engulfed in the start of the new year starting that Valentine’s day seems to be sneaking up on us.  Luckily, we still have plenty of time to prep without stress.  Growing up, my brother, sister and I would come downstairs in the morning to find a small heart-shaped box of chocolates and sometimes a small gift at our seat at the table.  When I left for college, my mom still made a point to deliver a care package with cute Valentine’s goodies like chocolate, nail polish, socks and paper decorations that I could use to decorate my dorm room.  It was such a fun surprise to peak into those boxes.  I collected some items in this Valentine’s day gift guide that would be great in a Valentine’s care package or box for your friends and sisters (or girlfriends and wives, guys.  hint, hint.).

Can we all take a moment to revel in the beauty of the pink and crystal earrings and the fun sparkle of the glitter earrings?  It makes me happy just to look at them :)  The gold bracelet seems plain and classic until you look closely at the engraved words on the inside that read “heart of gold.”  Fitting for Valentine’s day, I’d say.

I love me a bright lipstick and freshly painted nails.  MAC makes some of my favorite bright lipsticks.  I love Ruby Woo, Lady Danger (pictured above) in reds and Pink Nouveau (pictured above) and Please Me for pinks. When I’m not feeling as adventurous, I keep a Clinique Chubby Stick in my purse at all times for everyday wear.  Essie has beautiful blush colors that are so popular right now, and what makes painting your nails at home even better is this nail dryer!  It is like bringing the salon home with you and you can use it over and over again for a cheaper manicure!

I don’t think it is possible to have too many socks, and in this cold weather it feels great to keep my skin hydrated with fresh floral lotion and my feet warm with cute socks.

If you have a weekend trip planned for Valentine’s day, this 36 Hours in the USA and Canada book is the perfect planning guide.  The New York Times guide to 150 weekends in North America is a great way to narrow down your trip choices and help create a great trip itinerary for your weekend.  It also makes a great coffee table book and conversation starter when you aren’t using it.

With all of these small trinkets and gifts, a cute pouch or bag is a great way to carry or compile them into a wonderful gift package.  So do as the bag says and treat yourself or treat someone else this Valentine’s day with some small, cute gifts from this Valentine’s day gift guide :)

I know I sound like a broken record, but I can’t believe Christmas is only a few days away! I’m both taking the day slowly and getting tons done – my favorite way to do it. I wore this Christmas outfit to a few Christmas parties we went to last weekend. We had three in one day and it was the perfect amount of dressy for our fanciest one but not too overdressed with some flats for the others. I love this full green skirt for the holiday events. It would be a great Christmas Eve or Christmas dinner outfit tomorrow or Friday :) While the skirt might not be readily available in your closet, I’m sure most people have a black turtleneck or long sleeve shirt (or even short sleeve with this crazy weather) that you can pair with a fun necklace and some heels to recreate most of this look. Have a non-stressful final day of preparation and an early merry Christmas!
