national doughnut day recipe roundup

Happy National Doughnut Day! In honor of this fun fabricated holiday, in place of today’s link love, we are doing a doughnut roundup!  I have done the difficult research to find lots of delicious doughnut (or donut) recipes for your viewing, and maybe tasting, pleasure.  If you’re not into making your own doughnuts, here is a list of places where you can score a free fried dough ball today.

I admit, I have not successfully made doughnuts before (I attribute the failure of my past doughnut making attempt to the fact that I tried to transport the dough before cooking it.  Why, why did I do that?), but it is something I really want to try again!  The closest I’ve gotten is doughnut muffins.  I think I could start with the baked ones and work my way up to the yeasted ones.  Maybe I would have more success with that? What better way to start than with a great recipe?

And now, a baker’s dozen recipes for you!

National Doughnut Day - Brown Butter Brulee Doughnuts

Don’t these look and sound amazing?! Brown butter + doughnut + bruleed sugar = mic drop. Joy, you’ve done it again.

National Doughnut Day - Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Doughnuts

I’m a sucker for anything cookie dough and these seem to be easier than the previous recipe. Maybe this is the doughnut I should start with to really solidify my nickname as “cookie girl.”

National Doughnut Day - Sufganiyot Jelly Doughnuts

These look almost too gorgeous to eat.  Almost.  And made with fig jam?! I’m in.

National Doughnut Day - S'mores Brioche Doughnuts

I love the fun topping on these s’mores doughnuts!  They are so cute and so perfect for this time of the year to enhance your regular old campfire s’mores.

National Doughnut Day - Coffee Coconut Cream Cheese Doughnuts

This coffee coconut cream cheese doughnut sounds like a creamy coconut milk latte and would probably be delicious dipped in your morning coffee.  Fika, anyone?

National Doughnut Day - Baked Lemon Blueberry Doughnuts

Blueberry and lemon is one of my favorite flavor combinations. It always tastes so fresh, and is even better now that blueberries are in season. The first recipe is a bit older, but looks delicious covered in cream cheese glaze. The second recipe is very similar, just a bit more recent with a lemon glaze. Decisions, decisions.

National Doughnut Day - Tres Leches Donut

I have never had tres leches cake, but I can’t think of a better way to try it than in doughnut form. Sweet cake doughnuts soaked with a tres leches glaze?!  And they use coconut milk!  So trendy, so delicious looking.

National Doughnut Day - Banana Bread Nutella Donuts

As I have mentioned before, I do not like bananas at all, but I LOVE banana bread of all varieties. Banana bread baked doughnuts seem like pre-portioned banana bread with frosting, so, perfect? With these we don’t have to choose if we want the chocolate version or the nutty version, we get both! Try the first one with chocolate ganache and peanuts or the second recipe with nutella glaze.

National Doughnut Day - Strawberry Jelly and Vanilla Cream Brioche Doughnuts with Lilac Sugar

You had me at brioche.  Also at vanilla cream.  Okay, and lilac sugar.  These are another round of absolutely gorgeous doughnuts that sound magical.  I can just imagine eating these at an outdoor brunch, surrounded by a beautiful garden.

National Doughnut Day - Passionfruit Curd Doughnuts

These passionfruit curd doughnuts remind me of Momofuku and their layer cake with passionfruit curd.  That bright curd is so enticing!

National Doughnut Day - Lemon Cheesecake Doughnuts

Continuing with the bright curds – lemon. cheesecake. doughnuts.  I’ll just leave that right there.

National Doughnut Day - Blackberry Jam Custard Donuts

And last, but not least, the doughnuts that I try to repin every time I see them.  These look amazing.  The fluffy sugar coated slightly lemony dough with blackberry custard filling spilling out calls my name every time.  I may have found my first attempt winner.

Happy National Doughnut Day!
